The first day (April 5th)
‘Norwegian Constitution Day and Grieg’
Guest: Kjell Viig
Lecturer: Hikari Kobayashi
This year is the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. Although Grieg had not been born when Norway gained independence from Denmark in 1814, he was a composer who lived a time of significant change before the dissolution of the alliance with Sweden in 1905. The purpose of this seminar was to learn Norwegian history and Grieg and to enjoy songs related to the anniversary.
The second day (April 6th)
‘Singing Four Psalms’
Baritone Solo: Kjell Viig
Choir: The Nordic Choral Society of Japan and volunteers
Piano: Fumie Masaki and Eriko Tanabe
Instructor: Shozo Ohtsuka
Kjell Viig has a reputation as a soloist of Grieg’s last work, Four Psalms. This seminar aimed to sing this choral work in Japanese translation made by Shozo Ohtsuka. First, the participants sang while listening to the piano, and then they sang a cappella.
This fulfilling and unique workshop achieved great success. Therefore, The Grieg Society of Japan already has a plan of a concert, inviting Viig on April 12, 2015. He became the honorary member of the society.
